The City of Riverside, the Western Riverside County Organization of Governments and Compass Blueprint teamed up to plan development around the Downtown Riverside Metrolink Station. The project will help facilitate the development of a Transit Village around the station and connect trains to other regional transportation. More importantly, the extensive outreach efforts gave a voice to the predominantly Latino neighborhoods to the east of the train tracks which had historically not been engaged in the redevelopment process.

Goals:

  • Transform an existing isolated transit center into a transit focused mixed use hub
  • Integrate rail with regional buses
  • Coordinate developers with transit planning process
  • Gather input from the community

Results:

  • A community workshop to provide information on transit villages and gather neighborhood input
  • Land use opportunities and constraints analysis from a transit-oriented perspective
  • A full-day design charrette
  • Contextual urban design strategies to intensify land uses
  • A design vision that illustrates the unique opportunities of TOD development
  • An open house with the community to informally discuss the proposed ideas
  • Overall transit village development recommendations to provide guidance through the next planning phases
